Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green Recognize Weekly Attendance Leaders

Week of April 8, 2024 
 

PROVIDENCE, RI – Acknowledging the importance of consistent attendance in education and in alignment with the #AttendanceMatters campaign, Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are pleased to highlight the top elementary, middle, and high schools with the greatest average weekly attendance as well as elementary and secondary schools with the greatest improvement in weekly attendance.

 

The following schools are Rhode Island’s attendance leaders for the week of April 8, 2024*: 

 

·     Elementary: Ashton Elementary School, Cumberland – 96.3% 

·     Middle: Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Middle School – 93.7% 

·     High School: Cumberland High School – 95.1%

 

Special recognition is extended to the following schools for demonstrating the most improved average attendance rates from the previous week:  

 

·     Elementary: Stony Lane Elementary School, North Kingstown – 3.9%

·     Middle: Joseph L. McCourt Middle School, Cumberland – 5% 

·     High: Central Falls High School – 5%

 

The Governor and Commissioner express their gratitude and encouragement to all schools in Rhode Island for their ongoing efforts to prioritize attendance and reinforce the value of consistent learning experiences for all students.

Former President Donald Trump's criminal hush money trial is back underway this morning in New York City. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in order to hide hush money payments. Those payments were allegedly to keep potentially damaging stories from going public in the run up to the 2016 election.        Some Pro-Palestinian protests are escalating at U.S. university campuses. Protesters at Columbia University have barricaded themselves inside an academic building overnight. The school started suspending students through next school year who refused to leave the encampment set up on campus after a two p.m. Monday deadline was set.        More severe weather may impact parts of America's heartland today. The warning comes after deadly tornadoes ripped across parts of Iowa, Oklahoma and Nebraska just days ago. The same areas are under threat today and tomorrow, just as recovery efforts continue.        Immigration is at the top of the list of the most important problems in the U.S. According to a new Gallup poll, this is the third straight month the issue has come in at number one. Other problems listed by respondents include the economy, inflation, and government.        Walmart is closing all 51 of its healthcare centers and stopping virtual healthcare services. After making a large push into healthcare in recent years, the company is shutting locations down in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Texas. The largest retailer in the U.S. seems to be taking a major turn in strategy that could leave a gap in healthcare access, particularly among lower-income patients without insurance.       Four teams could punch their ticket to the second round in the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight. In the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Maple Leafs will attempt to avoid elimination against the Bruins in Boston in game five of their series. Then, the Carolina Hurricanes will look to knock out the New York Islanders in game five. In the West, the Colorado Avalanche will try to advance with a win over the Jets in Winnipeg. Lastly, the Nashville Predators are set to face off against the Canucks in Vancouver for game five.
