PRECIOUS BLOOD CEMETERY TOUR

In conjunction with the Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks, the Woonsocket Historical Society is conducting an historical tour of the Precious Blood Cemetery on Sunday, April 28 at 1:00 pm.    The cemetery is located at the corner of Rathbun Street and Diamond Hill Road.

This is a free tour.  Plan on meeting at the corner at 1:00 at the gated entrance.  The tour is expected to last 1.5 hours.  Plan on wearing comfortable shoes. 

With the establishment of Precious Blood Church in Woonsocket in the 1870's, Rev. Charles Dauray recognized the need of a parish cemetery and purchased the land.  Today this is still an active cemetery, however, since 1954 there are no longer any plots available for sale.   There are a little more 23,500 burials, of which only a little more than 59% are marked.

According to the organizers, there are many famous Woonsocket people buried at the cemetery, and many who are not so famous but who have an interesting story. Come hear their stories.

At least four people are dead and hundreds of thousands are without power in Texas after severe weather hit the Houston area. City officials confirmed the deaths Thursday night as powerlines and trees were knocked down across the city.       The House has passed a bill to prevent President Biden from withholding weapons to Israel. The push by Republican leaders is in response to Biden's decision to pause one shipment of bombs to Israel due to concerns over a full-scale military operation in Rafah. The final vote was 224-to-187, with 16 Democrats going against House Democratic leadership and President Biden.        The Biden administration is moving forward with a proposal to reclassify marijuana from a schedule one to a schedule three drug. The Department of Justice issued a notice of proposed rulemaking Thursday to reclassify marijuana to a less restrictive category. The change reflects a major shift in cannabis policy across the country, as dozens of states over the last decade have legalized recreational marijuana.        A Texas man who shot a protester dead is getting a clean slate. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has recommended a full pardon for Daniel Perry. He was convicted in the 2020 death of Garrett Foster, who was part of the George Floyd protests.        Gas prices in California will increase thanks to a clean air tax. The California Air Resources Board is mandating that 50 cents per gallon be added to the price of gasoline in an effort to move California away from petroleum-powered engines by 2035.       Nearly 60-percent of the world's coral reefs have become bleached in the last year. On Thursday, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced coral reefs around the globe are undergoing a mass bleaching event due to record-high ocean temperatures.
